Phoenix survives #NSD to edge Slaughter-less Ginebra
Matthew Wright scored 19 points and Jeff Chan also finished with 19, including a key basket late, as Phoenix turned back Barangay Ginebra 87-82 in the PBA Philippine Cup at Araneta Coliseum on Friday.
Phoenix was ahead by as many as 24 points, but in classic never-say-die fashion Ginebra made a run in the fourth quarter to make it a game.
Behind by 20 to the start the fourth, coach Tim Cone and his crew methodically closed the gap to 7, 83-76, with 70 seconds remaining, eliciting a chant of “Ginebra, Ginebra” from the sparse, partisan crowd.
Chan silenced the Barangay by burying a contested 17-foot jumper less than a minute left, making it 85-76. It proved to be an adequate enough lead against a Ginebra squad that cut the deficit further down to 3, 85-82, with 2 seconds left but didn’t have the final possession.
Two free throws by Chan settled the final score.
