Calvin Abueva powers Alaska to hard-fought win vs Meralco
Alaska turned out to be the hungrier team on Wednesday night as the Aces outclassed Meralco 103-98 in a highly physical game in the PBA Philippine Cup at Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday.
Calvin Abueva shrugged off early foul trouble to power Alaska past Meralco with an all around performance of 19 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.
Alaska also got a big boost from the bench with Vic Manuel also tallying 19 points. Kevin Racal, who got 8 points, knocked down back-to-back threes late in the game to stop the Bolts on their tracks.
"We finally got a win, Happy New Year everybody," said Alaska coach Alex Compton after the game.
"I thought our defense was way better. It's really nice to see that there were contributions from everybody on the floor.”
The Aces relied on their vaunted pressure defense just as Meralco coach Norman Black feared, forcing the Bolts to commit 17 turnovers that translated to 17 points for Alaska.
