Not just Pasaol: Second unit shows up for UE Red Warriors

MANILA, Philippines – Alvin Pasaol has hogged most of the spotlight for University of the East in UAAP Season 80, and for a good reason.

The stocky forward rewrote the UAAP record books with a 49-point explosion against De La Salle University, then followed it up with a 32-point effort as the Red Warriors won for the first time by beating University of Santo Tomas, 96-91, in their final game of the first round.

UE put together a winning streak for the first time all season on Saturday by shocking National University, 90-77. One would expect Pasaol's name to be on top of the stat sheet, but surprisingly, he was smack in the middle, with only 11 points in 19 minutes of playing time.

Instead, the Red Warriors used a balanced effort and got solid contributions from their bench. In the pivotal fourth quarter, when they outscored NU 28-18, Pasaol did not even leave the bench, and players like Mark Olayon, Nick Abanto, and Wilson Bartolome took charge for UE.

"I'm proud of the way the second group came in," beamed UE coach Derrick Pumaren after the game. "They gave Alvin the needed rest."
