Wozniacki outsteadies Vesnina to move on in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, OH, USA - No.6 seed Caroline Wozniacki scored her eighth win in 10 career meetings against Elena Vesnina to begin her campaign at the Western & Southern Open on Wednesday, 6-2, 6-4.

Wozniacki had lost just once to the Russian since January of 2009, and it was quickly evident as to why over the course of the one hour, 22-minute affair on Court 10.

Rogers Cup runner-up Caroline Wozniacki opened her campaign at the Western & Southern Open with a clinical victory over Elena Vesnina.
A double fault handed Wozniacki an advantage she never surrendered in the third game of the match, and though Vesnina had several opportunities to draw ahead or even in the early stages of the match, it was Wozniacki who had the answer every time.

In total, Wozniacki saved three break points in the first set, including two in her first service game that would've seen Vesnina lead 2-0, and a third in the sixth game which would've drawn the set even at 3-3.

In the second set, Wozniacki against moved ahead by a break in the third game, and though Vesnina tied the set and moved ahead 3-2 with a love hold, she was unable to solve the defensive prowess of the No.6 seed, who won four of the final five games.

With the victory, Wozniacki sets up a third round meeting with Australian qualifier Ashleigh Barty, who stunned Venus Williams in three sets for her first career Top 10 win earlier on Wednesday.
