Martinez hard at work as Winter Olympics draws closer

LAKE FORREST, California – Olympics-bound Michael Martinez put in some work over the weekend with coach Slava Zagor, as he continues his preparations for the Winter Games.

"Practice has been really good," the 21-year-old Martinez said. "I'm pretty excited to do my performance out there."

After making history four years ago as the first Southeast Asian figure skater in the Winter Olympics, Martinez made history anew as he takes the ice as the first Philippine athlete to compete in back-to-back Games.

Martinez has grown since the Sochi Olympics. He now stands two inches taller, and packs an extra 10 pounds of muscle.

"Performance-wise, my choreography is a lot better," said Martinez. "The way I project on the ice is a lot better, because I have strength."
