Wozniacki zooms past rival Radwanska in Toronto
TORONTO, Canada - No.6 seed Caroline Wozniacki sealed a spot into the Rogers Cup quarterfinals with a solid straight sets victory over close friend and longtime rival Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-3, 6-1.
Wozniacki, a champion here in 2010, was competing against the Pole for the 17th time. The duo have played four times in the last two years - all on hardcourts - and have split the meetings with two wins apiece.
Though their last meeting was at Radwanska’s wedding a few weeks ago, on the court the pair put friendship aside to battle for a spot in the Rogers Cup quarterfinals.
“I've known Aga since we were probably five and six or six and seven,” Wozniacki said in her post-match press conference. “So there's really no surprises or, you know, any secrets.
“Nothing really changes. We go out there and we battle it out every time. And, you know, we've played each other a million times also in juniors and in practice, we hit together a lot. Every match we just go out there and we try our best.”
Their 78-minute encounter started with a few stray errors from Wozniacki and Radwanska winning eight points in a row to break to love and take the first lead in the match at 2-1.
But that would be the Pole’s only lead as Wozniacki quickly found her range - and her famous consistency - to cut down on the errors and play more attacking tennis. She broke back and reeled off the next five of six games to take the opening set.
It was more one-way traffic in the second, with Wozniacki building up a 5-0 lead before Radwanska got her name on the board with a break. But Radwanska, who struggled with her serve all match long, couldn’t hold on in the next game as Wozniacki finished off the match.
Still searching for her first title of 2017 after reaching four finals, Wozniacki’s next opponent will be World No.1 Karolina Pliskova. The Czech split sets with Japanese teenager Naomi Osaka before her opponent was forced to retire early in the third.
It’ll be the fourth time Wozniacki takes on Pliskova this season, falling to the Czech in the finals of Eastbourne and Doha, but getting her revenge in Miami.
“We've had tight matches this year; I lost twice and I won once,” Wozniacki said. “And obviously she's a great player. She's playing very aggressive and she's playing fast. She's had a great
year.
“It's going to be difficult, but I'm looking forward to it. I'm going to have fun out there.”
