Thunder rookie Terrance Ferguson receives FIBA clearance
OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma City Thunder first-round pick Terrance Ferguson has obtained clearance from FIBA to sign with an NBA team, according to a FIBA source.
Ferguson, who played for the Adelaide 36ers in Australia last year, did not participate in Orlando Summer League, which ran July 1 through 7, because he was yet to obtain clearance, something necessary for any player who breaks an overseas contract to come to the NBA.
Ferguson received clearance from FIBA on July 14, per a FIBA source, and is now eligible to negotiate a contract with the Thunder. The team does not have any official activities until training camp begins in September. He would need to be under contract to compete there. Oklahoma City chose him with the No. 21 selection in this past June’s draft, the team’s only pick of the night.
The Thunder had similar clearance issues when they signed point guard Norris Cole midseason this past year. It took almost a week to obtain clearance for Cole, who was coming over from playing in China.
The 19-year-old Ferguson played one season for Adelaide, averaging 4.6 points and 1.2 rebounds in 15.1 minutes.
NBA teams are not involved in the process of obtaining clearance from FIBA. Instead, the incumbent team and FIBA fit into those roles. In Ferguson's case, talks were between FIBA and Adelaide.
