San Sebastian learned plenty of lessons in loss to San Beda
MANILA, Philippines – The San Sebastian College Golden Stags showed that they learned their lessons from their heartbreaking defeat to San Beda College on opening day with an impressive bounce-back victory on Thursday afternoon against the Arellano University Chiefs.
After bowing to the defending champions Red Lions, 76-67, last Saturday, the hosts Golden Stags came back with a wire-to-wire 65-56 win over the Chiefs at the Arellano Gym for their first win of NCAA Season 93. San Sebastian showed great composure in the road game, with RK Ilagan and Renzo Navarro drilling big shots down the stretch to fend off the home team.
For San Sebastian coach Egay Macaraya, their performance on Thursday showed that they have learned their lessons from the loss to San Beda.
"Sa totoo lang, sa last four minutes (vs. San Beda), doon lang kami nag-collapse," said Macaraya of their game against the Red Lions, which saw them go toe-to-toe with the defending champions only to fall apart down the stretch.
The Golden Stags did their homework from that loss, said Macaraya, and realized that their late-game lapses were due in part to a lack of energy and effort stemming from exhaustion. "Medyo pagod na rin," admitted the coach.
On Thursday, Macaraya was quicker to make substitutions, and no San Sebastian player logged more than 30 minutes of action.
