Blatche eager to suit up in FIBA Asia Cup, says Gilas manager
MANILA, Philippines – Andray Blatche's commitment to the national team cause cannot be questioned, even if he does spend most of his time away from the Philippines.
According to Gilas Pilipinas team manager Butch Antonio, the naturalized center has made it clear that he is ready and willing to suit up for flag and country anew when the Philippines competes in the FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon from August 8 to 20.
"We're in talks with Blatche. I just cannot be sure until he is signed, until his signature is on the dotted line. I cannot confirm any participation. But Andray's group is in touch with us, and he is very much ganado," Antonio told reporters on Wednesday after the send-off for the national team for the Jones Cup.
"He's anxious. He was saying, basta just give me a call, and I'll be ready," Antonio revealed.
Blatche was superb for the Philippines in the SEABA Championships in May, wherein he led Gilas Pilipinas in a dominant campaign.
If and when Blatche does return for another tour of duty, it will be for the FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon and not in the Southeast Asian Games, Antonio confirmed. The two tournaments have a brief overlap, and Blatche's name was left out of the roster for the SEA Games in any case.
