San Beda takes down Letran for third straight win

MANILA, Philippines – Defending champion San Beda College unleashed an explosive third quarter to overpower bitter rivals Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 81-74, and win their third straight game in the NCAA Season 93 men's basketball tournament on Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Red Lions found themselves trailing, 27-34, at the half as they fired blanks from the field, and the Knights appeared poised to snap a two-game skid against the defending champions.

Everything changed in the third quarter, however, when the Red Lions outscored the Knights, 28-16. Sharpshooter AC Soberano exploded for 11 points, and Javee Mocon added eight as the two conspired to outscore Letran.

"I just challenged the guys in the locker room to stick with our system, stick with our game plan, and play as a team," said San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez. "We will not win this game if not for my players. They simply stepped up."

The Red Lions did enough to stay in control throughout the fourth period, although the Knights did come within two points twice, at 56-58 and again at 65-67.

Each time, however, San Beda was able to pad their advantage. Ultimately, it was Mocon who dealt the final blow on the Knights with back-to-back lay-ups that made it a nine-point game, 79-70, with just a minute left to play.
