JRU triumphant in Lasquety's coaching debut
MANILA, Philippines – Jose Rizal University (JRU) leaned on its veterans to crush Mila's Lechon, 96-67, and give Gio Lasquety a victory in his coaching debut in the 2018 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup on Thursday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
Jeckster Apinan, Ervin Grospe, and Paolo Pontejos carried much of the load for the debuting Heavy Bombers.
Pontejos got things started for JRU, as he scored 12 points of his 14 points in the first half. The Heavy Bombers soon overhauled a slim 18-22 first-quarter deficit and seized a 39-29 lead at the half.
Apinan picked up from where Pontejos left off, as he spearheaded the Heavy Bombers' breakaway in the second half. He scored 16 of his 20 points in the final two quarters, while also grabbing 14 rebounds.
Grospe contributed 16 points in JRU's comfortable 29-point win.
