Onwubere wants to prove that EAC is no pretender

MANILA, Philippines – For Sidney Onwubere, Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) simply could not afford to lose to Mapua University in their NCAA Season 93 showdown on Tuesday.

The Generals entered the game on the heels of back-to-back losses against San Beda College and Colegio de San Juan de Letran, and another defeat would have sent them hurtling down the stands. Moreover, it would have meant that EAC struggled against a Mapua team that was not expected to make much noise in Season 93.

For a while, it appeared that Onwubere's fears were going to materialize. A 10-point EAC lead dissipated behind a series of daring drives by Mapua's Andoy Estrella, and the Generals lost big man Hamadou Laminou to fouls with still six minutes left.

Onwubere, however, refused to let his team suffer an upset.

"Iniisip ko going to the last two minutes of the game na lamang ang Mapua ng tatlo," he said, referring to the Cardinals' 67-64 lead at the 2:36 mark of the fourth period.

"Sabi ko, hindi pwedeng mangyari ito. Hindi kami pwedeng matalo. Kasi, sinasabi namin na contender kami, tapos ganoon, fourth quarter, lamang 'yung Mapua," he added.
