Norwood fine with ‘old man’ tag, possible last Gilas stint
Gabe Norwood was called upon once again to play for the national team that will compete at the FIBA Asia 2017 in Beirut, Lebanon. At 32, he will be among the veterans expected to stand up one of the leaders for Gilas Pilipinas.
“The old man,” Norwood corrected and joked on being the team veteran. “You can be straight with that. I’m the old man on the team.”
Norwood first suited up for Gilas Pilipinas in the 2007 William Jones Cup and also played during the 2007 FIBA Asia wars. For Norwood, putting the name of the country on his chest will always be an honor.
“Ten years ago, Coach Chot found me and I played and represented the country. It is an honor that ten years later, I can still be there and still be present.”
Currently on his eighth season with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, Norwood is aware that his current tour of duty may very well be his last for Gilas.
“You never know when these opportunities come. Who could say, this could be my last go-around, so I just really want to enjoy and keep us a high standard in the Philippines that it is right now.”
