With row settled, marathoner Mary Joy Tabal now focused on SEA Games training

Olympic marathon runner Mary Joy Tabal said she is happy that she and the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association are working together again.

The PATAFA, the country’s governing body for track and field, released a statement on Thursday officially bringing Tabal back in its fold, following allegations that Tabal wasn't following federation rules.

Part of the condition for Tabal’s reinstatement is the inclusion of former steeplechase runner Rene Herrera as her coach. Herrera won 5 gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games.

In a text message to ABS-CBN News, Jonel Borromeo, one of Tabal’s backers, said the marathoner is looking forward to preparing for the SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur in August.

“Joy is ecstatic and thankful to PATAFA for her reinstatement,” Borromeo said. “She can now focus on her training.”

Tabal won a silver in the 2015 SEA Games. With her stint in the Rio Games last year, she became the first Filipina marathoner to compete in the Olympics.
