Konta books quarterfinal place in Nottingham

NOTTINGHAM, England - Johanna Konta reached the quarterfinals of the Aegon Open on Thursday, beating Yanina Wickmayer 6-4, 6-1.

The 26-year-old benefited from a shortened first-round match against Tara Moore after her fellow Briton retired early through injury but didn't have that luxury on this occasion.

British No.1 overcomes Yanina Wickmayer in straight sets at the Aegon Open.
The British No.1 made a blistering start to the first set, breaking the Wickmayer serve twice to establish early dominance.

The Belgian responded and managed to break back, winning the next three games after Konta had blazed to a 4-0 lead.

But the WTA World No.8 defended her additional break bravely, despite losing her rhythm a touch on a gusty Centre Court, and served out the first set.

Konta broke again in the first game of the second set to halt Wickmayer's momentum before seeing out the set to reach the last eight, where she will play the Australian, Ashleigh Barty. The top seed served five aces to Wickmayer's one, and made eight fewer unforced errors than her opponent.

Victory helps Konta rebuild after her surprise first-round exit at Roland Garros last month.

Elsewhere, Maria Sakkari overcame a slow start to beat Christina McHale 1-6, 7-6, 7-5.

American McHale had shocked second seed Anastasija Sevastova in round one and stormed to the opening set on Thursday before a stirring recovery from her Greek opponent.

Sakkari was also taken to three sets, by Slovakian Jana Cepelova, in her first match earlier in the week and now goes on to face the Croatian, Donna Vekic, in the quarterfinal.
