Slaughter-less Ginebra shocks SMB in wild finish
MANILA, Philippines – Barangay Ginebra ended its losing streak in stunning fashion on Sunday, as the Gin Kings outlasted defending All-Filipino champion San Miguel Beer, 100-96, in front of a considerable crowd at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Gin Kings trailed by as much as 16 points in the opening period, found their rhythm in the pivotal third quarter, then held off San Miguel's furious comeback in the final frame to snap a three-game slide.
In the process, they also gave the Beermen their first loss of the 2017-18 PBA Philippine Cup.
"Who would've thought that we can come out and win that game, after the way we've played the last three games?" Ginebra coach Tim Cone asked rhetorically after their victory, which hiked their record to 3-3.
San Miguel dropped to 5-1 in the conference.
Ginebra was still playing sans Greg Slaughter, but got a remarkable effort from back-up big man Raymond Aguilar. LA Tenorio and Japeth Aguilar each scored 23 points, while Scottie Thompson had 10 rebounds and eight assists.
