Nabong, Grey shine in GlobalPort's rout of Meralco
MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) Kelly Nabong and Jonathan Grey led the way for GlobalPort on Sunday, as the Batang Pier demolished the Meralco Bolts, 107-88, in the 2017-18 PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Playing against his former team, Nabong went to work immediately, and had 12 points and nine rebounds at the half. The bruising big man finished with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while adding 17 rebounds and three blocks.
Grey – another former Meralco player who was acquired by GlobalPort in a four-team trade in May 2017 – also had a field day against the Bolts. The sophomore guard exploded for 24 points, 13 of which came in an explosive third quarter.
Nevertheless, GlobalPort coach Pido Jarencio stressed that it was their work on the defensive end that led to the big win.
"I think 'yung defense namin ang nag-work in this game," said Jarencio after his team limited the Bolts to only 37.1% shooting from the field. "First, second, and third quarter, grabe ang depensa (namin)."
