Signature ‘mayhem’ may be gone but defense still priority — La Salle coach
It won’t be called “mayhem” anymore, but an intense defensive mindset will remain one of La Salle’s biggest weapons even after the exit of former coach Aldin Ayo.
Louie Gonzales, who succeeded Ayo after the latter moved to the University of Santo Tomas, said some of the elements of Ayo’s system, which puts relentless pressure on opposing teams, will remain.
Gonzales formerly served as La Salle’s deputy head coach and an assistant coach for the Letran Knights, both under Ayo.
“Ang lagi ko naman priority ay defense, kasi I believe the lower the score ng opponent, you have a better chance of winning. I may not call it ‘mayhem,’ but the mindset is still here,” Gonzales said when he guested on DZMM’s “Fastbreak” on Saturday.
“If you don't play defense, there's a problem. If you're a scorer and you can't shoot anymore, how can you help your team?
