PBA clarifies calls at end of Ginebra-SMB game
MANILA, Philippines – The San Miguel Beermen were left scratching their heads after Chris Ross was assessed a technical foul with just 4.5 seconds left to play in their PBA Philippine Cup game against Ginebra on Sunday.
The Beermen were trailing, 98-95, when a foul had been called on Sol Mercado after a rebounding play under the SMB basket. Ross, standing near the foul line, was handed the ball by a referee and he proceeded to take – and miss – the first free throw.
A 30-second timeout called by SMB in between freebies gave the referees a chance to review the play, after which they called a technical foul on the Beermen. The reason? Ross was not supposed to shoot the free throw. Instead, it was his teammate, Chico Lanete, who had been fouled.
Ginebra's LA Tenorio made good on the freebie, giving his team a 99-95 lead. Lanete proceeded to split his charities, and the Gin Kings held on for a 100-96 triumph.
Eric Castro, the PBA's deputy director for basketball operations, offered an explanation for the strange situation at the end of the game.
"Nakita niyo sa replay, (referee) Noy Guevarra was trying to give the ball to Lanete. Then, Chris Ross, siya 'yung nagpunta sa free throw," said Castro.
