JRU sinks San Sebastian in women's volleyball, thanks to Alvarez's career-best
MANILA, Philippines – Shola Alvarez exploded for a career-high 28 points and led Jose Rizal University (JRU) to a hard-fought five-set victory over San Sebastian College in the NCAA Season 93 women's volleyball tournament on Monday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Bombers nearly squandered a two-set advantage, but made the big plays in the fifth set to hack out a 27-25, 25-23, 22-25, 16-25, 15-12 victory – their first of the season.
It marked the first time that JRU has beaten San Sebastian in recent NCAA history. It was the Lady Stags' first loss in the elimination round in two years. "Baste" swept the single round eliminations in both Seasons 91 and 92, but lost in the finals both times.
"I've heard we've never won against San Sebastian, even before I became coach here five years ago," said JRU mentor Mia Tioseco. "We're happy we made history."
"Two years in a row silang nasa finals," she added, referring to San Sebastian. "Siyempre, it's a very big step for us. At least, nakapanalo kami sa ganoong ka-veteran na team."
