FEU stuns Ateneo to force do-or-die for last finals berth

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) A determined Far Eastern University (FEU) squad outplayed the Ateneo de Manila University from start to finish to force a do-or-die game for the last finals berth in UAAP Season 80.

Virtually all players contributed for FEU, as the Tamaraws pulled off an 80-67 upset of the top-seeded Blue Eagles in their Final 4 game on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.

It was the second straight loss for the Blue Eagles, who won their first 13 games of the elimination round to secure the No. 1 seed and a twice-to-beat advantage. Their bid to sweep the eliminations was denied by defending champion De La Salle University last week.

The Tamaraws virtually repeated their achievement in Season 79, when they – as the third-seeded squad – similarly outlasted the Blue Eagles in the first game of their Final 4 match. Ateneo went on to win in the do-or-die game, however, and advanced to the finals.

"We haven't done anything yet," said FEU coach Olsen Racela. "Ang nakuha lang namin is to take away the twice-to-beeat advantage of Ateneo. We're looking forward to Wednesday's game and see what we can do to try to stop a really strong team like Ateneo."
