UP rookie shrugs off career game in loss to UE

MANILA, Philippines – Arguably the University of the Philippines' most talented recruits in years, Juan Gomez de Liaño proved he is worth the hype with a breakout performance for the Fighting Maroons on Sunday against University of the East (UE).

With both Paul Desiderio and Jun Manzo shackled by the Red Warriors, it was Juan and his elder brother Javi, who helped the Fighting Maroons stay in the game.

Juan, the Juniors MVP last season, finished with a career-high 22 points on nine-of-15 shooting, while also adding eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals. His brother Javi added 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Given the result of the game, however, Juan was still dissatisfied with his own performance.

"I think individually, I think I did pretty well," said the 17-year-old, after UP bowed to UE, 73-64.
