San Beda Red Lions lick their wounds, brace for NCAA semis game

MANILA, Philippines – For the first time in 11 NCAA seasons, the San Beda College Red Lions find themselves looking up at another team at the end of the elimination round.

A painful 107-105 double-overtime loss to Lyceum of the Philippines University in their final game put San Beda's elimination round record at 16-2 – and allowed the Pirates to complete a sweep and clinch the No. 1 seed.

Making the defeat even more agonizing is that the Red Lions will not be armed with a twice-to-beat advantage in the stepladder semifinals. Instead, they will just await the winner of the battle between No. 3 Jose Rizal University and whoever will ultimately get the fourth seed.

Yet San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez refused to dwell too much on the loss, and instead expressed his pride for the Red Lions, who fought back from a 10-point halftime deficit and were on the brink of victory several times.

"We didn't finish (the game)," he observed. "We had a good chance of winning that game, but in the end, it just boiled down to one free throw. It boiled down to easy lay-ups, misses, and they got defensive rebounds, and then we fouled."
