Salem sparks NU past still-winless UST
MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) Even though they played without their head coach, the National University (NU) Bulldogs still showed enough fortitude to take down the woeful University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers.
Thanks to an explosive second half, the Bulldogs out-gunned the Growling Tigers, 91-83, to snap a two-game losing streak in the UAAP Season 80 men's basketball tournament on Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
NU entered the game having lost five out of their last six games, but by barging back into the win column, they improved to 4-6 and fanned their flickering Final 4 chances in Season 80. They notched the win even with head coach Jamike Jarin who was serving a one-game suspension after getting thrown out in their loss to Ateneo de Manila University last Wednesday.
Meanwhile, it was already the 10th consecutive defeat of the once-proud Growling Tigers. They are now formally eliminated from the Final 4 race, making it the second straight season that UST has failed to advance to the semifinals.
"It was tough when we heard that Coach Jamike was suspended for the next game," said NU's sweet-shooting forward Matt Salem, who had 22 points and 10 rebounds in the contest. "But we knew he'd leave it in the hands of the coaching staff, and we have a great coaching staff."
