Quarterfinal run was stuff of dreams, says Kvitova
Petra Kvitova has admitted her run to the quarterfinals of the US Open this week was beyond expectations. The Czech impressed at Flushing Meadows as she continued her comeback from a home attack last December, defeating Jelena Jankovic, Alizé Cornet, Caroline Garcia and incoming World No.1 Garbiñe Muguruza en route to the last eight.
The No.13 seed was eventually beaten by Venus Williams in a three-set classic on Wednesday as the semifinals became an all-American affair.
"Of course that loss hurts, but that's what I dreamed about," the 27-year-old posted on social media. "To come back and compete on big stages against great players like Venus. To prove that I can compete with them! I will take positives from this."
Following her quarterfinal defeat, Kvitova also spoke of the four months since her comeback and her plans for the remainder of the season.
"It's tough to say right now, but overall, I think it's amazing," she said. "I didn't really think that I can come so far. It was great to win in Birmingham, but that was pretty early [in my return] and put a little bit of pressure on. I just wanted to play better and better, which I wasn't ready for. I'm just glad that I could show it here, that there is a way to play well again. In a couple of days I hope that I will say: 'Good job'. But not just now."
After a shorter season than usual, Kvitova will end her campaign in the Far East: "I'm playing Tokyo, Wuhan, Beijing and Tianjin [in the coming weeks]. It's a pretty long trip in Asia, but I didn't play for five, six months. It's not a place I really love, but I don't know. I'm really looking forward to be there, standing on the court again.
"I hope it will be a little bit easier for me to breathe and play well, and have no expectation again. I didn't really think about the Asia swing so far, but I will need to in couple days. The season, it's getting close to finishing; I start pretty light and it's already finishing. It will be nice."
