NU coach Jarin all praises for Issa Gaye

MANILA, Philippines – National University (NU) coach Jamike Jarin lavished praise on Senegalese big man Issa Gaye after his tremendous defensive effort in the Bulldogs' hard-fought 94-84 win over University of Santo Tomas (UST) on Wednesday.

Gaye played the best game of his young UAAP career, making six of his 14 field goals for 17 points, while also grabbing 13 rebounds – nine of which came on the offensive end. He also had four blocked shots, all of which came in a superb stretch in the third quarter when he completely shut down the paint.

The Bulldogs struggled to put away the Growling Tigers, particularly when Gaye was on the bench and UST's Reggie Basibas repeatedly cruised his way to the cup. But he took charge anew in the final three minutes of the game, anchoring NU's defense to help them pull away for good.

"He is just a joy to coach," Jarin said of Gaye after their win, which was their second of UAAP Season 80. "He's very humble. He does all the dirty work, he makes a lot of sacrifices – staying inside, protecting the rim."

Jarin was delighted that Gaye was finally being given recognition for his performances, crediting the big man for his maturity, as evidenced by his foul numbers. After struggling with foul trouble in their first two games, Gaye lived up to his promise and only committed a single foul against UST.
