Mertens eases through in Tokyo
TOKYO, Japan - Third seed Elise Mertens eased through the first round of the Japan Women's Open, beating Evgeniya Rodina 7-6, 6-1.
The Belgian was looking to bounce back from her early exit at the US Open, where she lost 6-3, 7-6 to eventual runner-up Madison Keys in the opening round.
Wildcard Kristyna Pliskova, seeded fourth, also had a comfortable start to her campaign, beating Chang Kai-Chen, 7-5, 7-5.
Seventh seed Alison Riske had a tougher time, with her compatriot Madison Brengle taking her to three sets. Riske came through, though, coming back from a set down to triumph 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Elsewhere, Wang Qiang beat Hsieh Su-Wei, 7-5, 6-2, and Han Xinyun defeated Misa Eguchi, also 7-5, 6-2.
Jana Cepelova progressed against Aliaksandra Sasnovich after the Belarusian retired with the score at 6-3, 1-0.
In the doubles, top seeds Makoto Ninomiya and Renata Voracova beat wildcards Misaki Doi and Chuang Chia-Jung 1-6, 7-6, 11-9, and Monique Adamczak and Storm Sanders had a straight-sets win against Japanese wildcards Erina Hayashi and Momoko Kobori, 6-2, 6-0.
