Eligibility battle continues for UP's Ricafort
MANILA, Philippines – University of the Philippines (UP) forward Rob Ricafort is not giving up on his dream to play UAAP basketball.
Ricafort was declared ineligible by the UAAP Eligibility Committee shortly before the Season 80 men's basketball tournament started, as he will turn 25 years old midway through the season.
"Ang rule kasi is you cannot be more than 25 for the whole season," said Ricafort, who will turn 25 in January 2018 – when the basketball tournament is already over.
He was formally declared ineligible last Friday – one day before the tournament started – when the UAAP Board of Trustees thumbed down his appeal. His teammate Ibrahim Ouattara was more fortunate, as he was declared eligible to play after a one-year residency.
Ricafort admits that the entire ordeal has been "like hell" for him, even as he drew support from other UAAP athletes and even professional basketball players.
