Austin welcomes challenge to lead Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas

MANILA, Philippines – In the short time that he has been in the Philippines, Isaiah Austin has proven that he is not one to back down from a challenge.

He has already worked his way back to basketball after Marfan syndrome threatened to take away his life's dream, so the 23-year-old big man did not even blink when asked about the challenge of leading the young Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas team.

Head coach Chot Reyes told reporters on Tuesday that Austin, despite being a relative newcomer to Philippine basketball, should be one of the leaders of the team when they compete in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup in China.

"I expect Isaiah to step in and take a more active (role), to be more assertive, even if he's very new. I'm looking forward for Isaiah to provide not only basketball skills, but also invaluable leadership," Reyes said.

To which Austin gamely replied: "That's completely fine with me."
