Stosur quietly confident of playing the US Open
Sam Stosur is quietly confident of being able to play at the US Open later this month as she continues to manage her recovery from a hand injury.
The Australian has not played since the start of June after suffering with the complaint during her fourth-round French Open defeat to eventual champion Jelena Ostapenko.
The 33-year-old missed the grass-court season with the injury but resumed light hitting in Melbourne this week ahead of the start of the US Open at the end of the month - a tournament Stosur won in 2011.
"I’m entered in Cincinnati and I’m still hopeful I’ll get to New Haven," the former World No.4 told Tennis Australia. "It’s just hard to say. If I feel ready [to fly], yes, definitely. I really, really want to play, but I want to make sure I’m ready to play. I can only do what I can do day to day."
Stosur has endured a stop-start return to training after suffering continual pain in her hand. "Every time I went out [to resume hitting] I was like: 'Oh, it’s a bit sore'. There’s a certain level where you expect there to be [in pain], but what’s too much? After a few days I was like: 'Nah. It’s certainly not gonna help it'.
"I took another couple of weeks off, then hit again [this week] but again it’s just like 20 minutes, mostly backhands, slowly starting to work up. It’s been pretty good but it’s a little sore. I’m still on the eight-year-old kids’ balls with low compression - pretty easy!
"The few days after [losing in the French Open] I was pretty gutted because I really felt like it was a good opportunity."
