Radwanska continues Vandeweghe dominance

TORONTO, Canada - No.10 seed Agnieszka Radwanska ended CoCo Vandeweghe’s Toronto stay in the opening round, moving past the big-serving American after a solid straight sets win.

“I’m just very happy to win that match in two sets, definitely” Radwanska told WTA Insider afterwards. “It wasn’t an easy draw - she’s been playing very good tennis this past couple of months.

No.10 seed Agnieszka Radwanska made it five victories in a row on hard courts over CoCo Vandeweghe, moving past the big-serving American in straight sets at the Rogers Cup.
“I know it was going to be tough, and I really prepared for that. I prepared for the big shots, big serve, I was focused on my serve from the beginning. And I think I did a good job.”

Last week, Vandeweghe’s strong performance saw her reach the Bank of the West Classic final in Stanford and earn a spot inside the WTA Top 20. But against Radwanska on Tuesday, she didn’t have too many answers to the Pole’s tricky style of play, struggling to deal with the slower pace.

Radwanska, a Montreal Rogers Cup champion in 2014, continues to be a nemesis for Vandeweghe. The Pole is undefeated on hard courts against the American, winning four matches a row before Vandeweghe scored her lone win over Radwanska at last year’s Birmingham.

She’s extended that hard court win streak to five in a row against Vandeweghe, notching a 6-3, 6-2 victory in her first match since Wimbledon.

“In tennis you don’t have easy draws - you have bad ones, or really bad ones,” Radwanska reflected in her on-court interview. “From the first round, you really have to play your best game to win.

“Right now tennis is so strong that everyone is playing very solid and a great game, you have to focus from the first point.

“I’m very very happy that I could play my best tennis today from the first point, especially here where conditions are pretty different from everywhere else. The first match is always tricky so I’m happy to win in two sets.”

Radwanska will go on to face the winner between big serving Timea Babos and July Breakthrough Player of the Month nominee Bianca Andreescu in the next round.
