Pangga could’ve won best boxer title
MANILA, Philippines - John Vincent Pangga, who won the flyweight gold in the just-concluded ASBC Asian Juniors Boxing Championships in Puerto Princesa in Palawan, could have nailed the tournament’s best boxer award as well.
But because of delicadeza, the Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines, through its secretary-general, Ed Picson, politely turned down the opportunity.
“I was told that if we wanted, John Vincent Pangga could win the coveted award,” Picson said at the close of the weeklong event that drew 142 boxers from 18 countries.
“I thanked my counterpart but told him that if they were just trying to make us happy as host, then we would not be happy accepting the award,” said Picson.
The Filipino boxing official felt that there were other boxers who truly excelled during the tournament, but stressed that he was not taking anything away from Pangga.
