Marinerong Pilipino outlasts Tanduay to force decider

MANILA, Philippines – Marinerong Pilipino's "miraculous" run in the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup continued on Thursday, after the Skippers outlasted Tanduay, 74-72, in their quarterfinal showdown at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The win extended Marinero's winning streak to six games, and allowed them to force a do-or-die battle for the last semifinals berth against the Rhum Masters on Tuesday next week.

"That's what we believe – that miracles still happen," Marinero coach Koy Banal said after his wards stood firm in the final two minutes to preserve the win. "The boys just gave it all. The battle cry was 'who wants it more,' and they answered it through action, not through words."

Marinero's new boys, Robert Herndon, Jun Gabriel, and Renzo Subido, all came through with solid performances, while John Alabanza and John Lopez made crucial defensive stops in the end game to allow the Skippers to fend off Tanduay.

"Hats off to the new fellows," said Banal. "They stepped up."

It was a back-and-forth game all the way through, with 11 deadlocks and seven lead changes. Tanduay briefly pulled ahead, 62-56, early in the fourth quarter, thanks to back-to-back triples by James Martinez that capped a 7-0 run.
