Letran's supporting cast starts to step up vs Arellano
MANILA, Philippines – Veteran guard Rey Nambatac was the hero of Colegio de San Juan de Letran's victory over Arellano University last Tuesday, as he scored 10 of his 15 points in the final quarter to lift the Knights to an 82-75 win over the Chiefs in the NCAA Season 93 tournament.
Yet after the game, Nambatac shrugged off his contributions and instead commended Letran's supporting cast – specifically Jeo Ambohot and Jeremiah Taladua.
"Kanina, lahat nag-step up [Everyone stepped up]," beamed Nambatac after the Knights improved to 2-3 in the tournament.
The less-heralded members of Letran were widely criticized following the Knights' 81-74 loss to San Beda College last week, which saw Nambatac, JP Calvo, Jerrick Balanza, and Bong Quinto combine for 71 points, only for their other teammates to let them down.
Nambatac himself called out his teammates and asked them to contribute more, especially after he and the rest of Letran's "Big Four" faded down the stretch against San Beda.
He got his wish in their game against Arellano. Ambohot came through with 15 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks, while Taladua contributed 13 points and 11 boards. Balanza, Calvo, and Quinto still got their numbers, but in all, it was a better team effort for the Knights.
