Kelly Hardeman more determined than ever to help Perlas
KUALA LUMPUR — Reduced to a mere spectator in the Southeast Asian Games here, Philippine-born forward Kelly Hardeman is even more determined to help the Philippine women's basketball team in future tournaments.
Dioceldo Sy, Perlas Pilipinas' chief backer, had expressed his intent to tap Hardeman as a naturalized player for the women's team months ahead of the SEA Games here, but his group was unable to finalize Hardeman's documents on time.
Thus, the 23-year-old Hardeman — born in St. Luke's in Quezon City and spent the first 18 years of her life in the Philippines — could do nothing but watch as Perlas bombed out of gold-medal contention in the Games.
"It was such a bummer," the 6-foot player said after Perlas' last game of the tournament, a 118-44 win over Vietnam.
"It is . . . sayang," Hardeman added. "It was so sad. I really think I can help, so that's what I think is so sad."
