Gilas holds off stubborn Singapore to advance to finals

KUALA LUMPUR — In a game that proved far closer than anticipated, the Philippine men's basketball team had to weather a gallant stand by a gutsy Singapore team to advance to the gold-medal game of the Southeast Asian Games.

Three Filipino players scored in double digits, as the Philippines fended off Singapore, 68-60, in the semifinals at MABA Stadium here on Friday night.

Christian Standhardinger finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds to help the Philippines defeat Singapore on Friday and advance to Saturday's gold-medal game. PSC/POC Pool
Troy Rosario had a double-double of 14 points and 10 boards, Christian Standhardinger added 13 points and 11 rebounds, but it was Mike Tolomia with his 10 points that spelled the difference for Gilas Pilipinas in the final frame.

"Singapore really gave us a fight," Gilas coach Jong Uichico said after the game. "It was close, they kept themselves in the game."

"We tried to blow the game open, but we just couldn't get it done," he admitted.
