Final 4, and not MVP trophy, is Onwubere's focus
MANILA, Philippines – Early in the NCAA Season 93 tournament, Sidney Onwubere has established himself as a potential contender for Most Valuable Player honors.
He has led Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) to a 3-2 win-loss record so far, and is averaging 16.0 points, 11.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.8 blocks per game in 34.3 minutes per contest.
On Tuesday, Onwubere took charge for the Generals once more, scoring 17 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in an 85-79 win over Arellano University. He knocked down a booming three-pointer with 3:24 left that gave EAC a 79-68 lead, which was enough for them to repulse the Chiefs' last-ditch rally.
Yet afterward, Onwubere gave the credit to his teammates. "Hindi naman ako lang," he said.
He was especially proud of players like Jerome Garcia and Jeric Diego, both of whom stepped up in a major way after Hamadou Laminou suffered a knee injury in the first quarter and had to be helped off the floor.
