EAC holds off Arellano to rise to solo third
MANILA, Philippines – The Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Generals averted a late-game collapse, holding on for a nervy 85-79 victory over the Arellano University Chiefs to claim solo third place in the NCAA Season 93 men's basketball tournament on Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
Veteran forward Sidney Onwubere starred for EAC with 17 points, 14 rebounds, and three blocks, while Juju Bautista tallied 14 points, and Jerome Garcia added 13 markers. It was EAC's second straight game, putting their record at 3-2.
"I'm very thankful na nag-deliver itong mga veterans ko," said EAC coach Ariel Sison after the victory.
"We were preparing to get consecutive wins. Hindi pa namin nagawa 'yun sa NCAA, so ayun ang pinaghandaan namin," he added.
The Generals lost big man Hamidou Laminou to a right knee injury late in the first quarter, and the Chiefs were able to tie the game at 43 heading into the halftime break.
