WTA Breakthrough Of The Month: Rybarikova
Magdalena Rybarikova came to Wimbledon unseeded and looming, with WTA insiders pointing to the inevitable second round clash betwen the Slovak veteran and Aegon International champion Karolina Pliskova, who was gunning not only for her maiden major title, but also the No.1 ranking.
Battling through knee and wrist surgeries that left her nearly outside the Top 500 earlier this spring, Rybarikova had gone on a tear ahead of her Wimbledon fortnight, winning four ITF Challenger Circuit titles - two on grass - and made the Aegon Open semifinals in Nottingham.
"I had very good grass season, Rybarikova said after upsetting Pliskova in three sets to make the second week. "I was quite confident about maybe first round, and I was not thinking more.
"When I saw the second round, I was like, 'Okay, that's going to be very difficult,' because I think Karolina was the favorite to win this title here. I know she won recently just Eastbourne.
"So I knew it's gonna be amazing, tough match. Somehow I won it. That opened up the draw, but I had to beat such a player like her to do it.
"Now, I'm speechless about everything right now. I'm so happy."
Rybarikova may have been at a loss for words, but hardly lacked form at the All England Club, pulling off another upset over tournament darkhorse CoCo Vandeweghe to reach the semifinals.
