San Mig defers to TNT in dominance debate
If these were the Triple Crown races, the San Miguel Beermen are just about to break from the starting gate at Belmont, with 11 other thoroughbreds, including stablemates Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and Star, snorting and looking to deny the heavy favorite early momentum in the PBA Governors’ Cup.
And like the winner of the Preakness and the Kentucky Derby, the Grand Slam-seeking Beermen, who had put away this season’s PBA Philippine Cup and Commissioner’s Cup, will be a moving target when they burst out of the stalls and thunder toward the first turn.
But while Austria will be preoccupied with preparations for a blazing start, careful not to bang against the gate when it swings open or get boxed in during the mad dash for positioning, and watchful, at the same time, of those immediately around him, one man seated inside the team owners’ booth across the finish line will be training his binoculars at one specific opponent.
“We have to watch out for TNT KaTropa, not only this year but for seasons to come,” says SMC sports director Alfrancis Chua when asked if SMB can compare with the legendary Crispa Redmanizers, owners of two Grand Slams, in terms of dominance.
“Malakas siguro ang San Miguel ngayon dahil nagkataon na magaganda ang nakuha namin (players) nitong mga nakaraang taon. Pero kung sa dominance, hindi ko pa masasabi iyon. It may not be obvious now what they are doing, but I believe TNT is the team poised to become the most dangerous team in the league.”
SMB’s 4-2 victory over TNT in the recent Commissioner’s Cup Finals, Chua says, could have easily gone the other way had the KaTropa not been hit by injuries to their import and several key local players.
