Fajardo aching to win first Commissioners Cup title
Only in his fifth year in the PBA, June Mar Fajardo has been racking in awards in the same way he has been dominating in the basketball court. “The Kraken’s” accolades spans locally and internationally from winning PBA Championships, MVPs and stints with Gilas Pilipinas. Last conference, his team earned the perpetual trophy in the Philippine Cup. After four championships, he has yet to win the PBA Commissioners Cup.
San Miguel’s performance in the 2016 Commissioners’ Cup was tainted with issues, particularly the one involving Tyler Wilkerson. The Beermen were eventually booted out in the semis. With Charles Rhodes, this time around, Fajardo and the rest of the Beermen return to the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals against TnT after 16 years.
“Siyempre sobrang gigil na ko namakuha yung championship. Pero alam naman natin na hindi ganun kadali yun. Kasi malakas yung TnT pero gagawin naming lahat para makuha ang Commissioners Cup kasi 16 years na daw hindi nakakapaglaro San Miguel sa Finals ng Commissioners cup,” said Fajardo.
Despite their dominance in the past couple of years, Fajardo will try to his best to reap what he can after past Commissioners Cup disappointments ever since his rookie year.
“Simula noong pumasok ako sa San Miguel, ang pinakamataas na na-abot naming yung semi-finals last year. Ngayon nandito na kami, dapat i-grab naming yung opportunity na ito at bibigyan naming ng magandang laban itong TNT kasi hindi natin alam kung every year nandito tayos a finals, diba? So baka ilang year ulit hahantayin bago naming marating ang finals.Habang nandito kami gagawin naming lahat sa finals.”
At 27 years old, Fajardo commitments have been taking its toll on his body. Aside from the beating his body has taken to reach the PBA playoffs, he is also part of the Gilas Pilipinas squad in between. He admits feeling the fatigue but nonetheless learned how to cope with it.
