Salado challenges Arellano teammates to step up after loss to Lyceum
MANILA, Philippines – Kent Salado knows the reason for Arellano University's up-and-down start to NCAA Season 93, which now includes an embarrassing 34-point loss to the unbeaten Lyceum Pirates on Tuesday afternoon.
"Siguro, kailangan lang talaga mag-step up ng mga kasama ko [I think my teammates need to step up]," Salado said bluntly after the game, where they were routed, 99-65, by a rampaging Lyceum of the Philippines University team.
Entering Tuesday's duel against Lyceum, Salado has been averaging 21.3 points on 52.1% shooting, 5.3 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. Last week, he had 25 points, six rebounds and eight assists while also converting the game-winner in a 73-72 overtime win against Jose Rizal University.
Against the Pirates, however, Salado was limited to only 11 points on 5-of-15 shooting. He did have seven rebounds and four assists, but also committed four turnovers and was a minus-20 for the game.
It was Zach Nicholls who led the Chiefs in scoring with 12 points, but did not contribute to any other statistical category.
Salado is justified in asking for more help from his teammates. Heading into Tuesday's game, no other Chief is averaging double-digits. Michael Canete is their second-leading scorer with nine points per game.
