Reyes: Gilas must play solid in Jones Cup

MANILA, Philippines -  Gilas Pilipinas braces for nine straight days of grueling action in the Jones Cup firing off Saturday in Taipei with coach Chot Reyes stressing the need for his wards to dish out solid games all throughout the tournament to get a crack at the crown.

“They have to realize the urgency that almost every possession and every defensive cover is almost a matter of life and death because of the kind of competition we’re playing in Taipei,” said Reyes.

“It’s very high level and we can’t afford costly mistakes,” added Reyes, anticipating nine days of severe tests the Gilas cadets will undergo through versus the hosts’ A and B teams, Iran, South Korea, Japan, Iraq, India, Team Canada 150 and Atletas All-Star Lithuania.

Gilas, reinforced by import Mike Myers, starts its Jones Cup campaign versus Team Canada 150 at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Taipei Peace International Basketball Hall.

The Philippines is considered the defending champion following the successful title run last year of Mighty Sports, a Phl club team laden with former PBA imports.

Reyes has steered Gilas to the Jones Cup championship in 2012, preceding their second-place finish in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship that served as their ticket to the World Cup in Spain in 2014.
