Onwubere comes up clutch as EAC outlasts Mapua
MANILA, Philippines – Sidney Onwubere and Raymund Pascua came up with huge three-pointers in crunch time as Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) outlasted Mapua University, 77-72, in the NCAA Season 93 men's basketball tournament on Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Generals squandered a 10-point advantage early in the fourth period and trailed 67-64 with just 2:36 left to play, but they proved to be the steadier team down the stretch against the Cardinals.
With Pascua and Onwubere leading the way, EAC ended the game on a fiery 15-5 run to claim their second win of the tournament, thus improving to 2-2.
Mapua, for its part, dropped to 1-3 and lost in heartbreaking fashion for the second consecutive contest.
"Thankful lang ako dahil we did not go 0-3. So at least, 'yung dalawang talo namin na magkasunod, hindi nasundan ng isa pa," said EAC coach Ariel Sison after the game. "I'm very happy. We prepared hard for this game."
Onwubere finished with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Jervin Guzman added 13 points in just 16 minutes of playing time. Jesse Bautista contributed a double-double of 12 points and 11 boards, making up for the two-point, five-rebound outing of Hamadou Laminou.
