Lyceum's Marcelino twins proud of stout defense against Arellano's Salado
MANILA, Philippines – After the first three games of the NCAA Season 93 men's basketball tournament, it's fair to say that Arellano University guard Kent Salado has emerged fully from the shadow of his former teammate, Jiovani Jalalon.
Known primarily as Jalalon's backcourt partner for the past couple of seasons, Salado has firmly established himself as the leader of the Chiefs in Season 93. Against Jose Rizal University last week, he went off for 25 points, six rebounds and eight assists, and hit the game-winner in a 73-72 overtime win.
But against Lyceum of the Philippines University on Tuesday, Salado found himself handcuffed by a pair of unheralded guards – the Marcelino twins, Jaycee and Jayvee.
"Parang tandem na tandem eh," Salado said of the Marcelino twins after Arellano slumped to a huge 99-65 loss to the Pirates.
"Kung saan ako pupunta, andoon sila. Sinasabay sila eh – 'pag pasok ng isa, parang palitan. Hindi ko nga alam kung sino ang bumabantay sa akin sa kanilang dalawa," he admitted. "Magaling 'yung dalawa, magaling dumepensa."
With the Marcelino twins hounding him all game long, Salado managed to make only five of his 15 field goals for 11 points. He had as many turnovers as assists, with four each. The Chiefs were outscored by 20 points when Salado was on the court.
