Kontaveit eases through Gstaad opener
GSTAAD, Switzerland - No.3 seed Anett Kontaveit has been one of the most in-form young stars this spring, and treated the Ladies Championship Gstaad crowd to a few of the reasons why in a 6-1, 6-3 win over qualifier Martina Trevisan to reach the second round.
“It was my first match on clay in a little while, and I was just happy to get through it," Kontaveit said after the match.
The 21-year-old Estonian first turned heads on the indoor hardcourts of the inaugural Ladies Open Biel Bienne, where she made her first-ever WTA final. Immediately backing that form up as the tour turned to clay, Kontaveit earned her first Top 10 win over Garbiñe Muguruza, and stunned then-WTA World No.1 Angelique Kerber en route to stellar results at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and the Internazionali BNL d'Italia.
She didn't let up on grass, winning her maiden WTA title at the Ricoh Open in 's-Hertogenbosch, and nearly upset former No.1 Caroline Wozniacki in the third round of Wimbledon.
Seeded No.3 in her second appearance in Gstaad, Kontaveit isn't dwelling too much on past results, and is eager to keep up her momentum heading into the summer hardcourt swing.
"You never have easy matches on this level and you have to play everyone, so it makes no difference for me."
Against Trevisan, Kontaveit saved four break points in the opening game but quickly took control of the opening set.
Down two breaks in the second, Trevisan saved a match point to break back as Kontaveit served for the match, but the No.3 seed survived a titanic final game to secure in 76 minutes.
"I thought I played aggressively and tried to dictate the play. I thought I did that well, so I’m happy to be through."
Standing between the Estonian and a spot in the quarterfinals is another qualifier, former junior star Anna Kalinskaya, who won a thrilling three-setter against hometown favorite Rebeka Masarova.
Around the grounds, defending champion and No.7 seed Viktorija Golubic took a tough loss to qualifier Antonia Lottner, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(5). Sara Sorribes Tormo also earned a hard-fought upset over No.8 seed Evgeniya Rodina, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5).
