Kiefer assures full focus on Gilas even as PBA beckons
MANILA, Philippines – Former Ateneo de Manila University star Kiefer Ravena is keeping his focus firmly on the Philippine national basketball team even as he continues to consider the possibility of throwing his name into the 2017 PBA Rookie Draft.
The 23-year-old Ravena will likely be among the top picks should he declare for the Draft this year, but on Wednesday, he made it clear that his priority is Gilas Pilipinas and its upcoming campaign in the Jones Cup in Taiwan.
"As a pro, set aside muna 'yan, aside especially with two or three major tournaments in front of us," Ravena said during Gilas Pilipinas' send-off event on Wednesday at Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria hotel in Ortigas.
Ravena, who won two titles with Ateneo in the UAAP, opted not to join the PBA out of college as he instead chased his NBA dream first. He made it as a practice player of the Texas Legends in the NBA D-League, before competing for Mighty Sports and then Alab Pilipinas in the ASEAN Basketball League.
He was eventually named to the Gilas Pilipinas pool and included in the roster for the Southeast Asian Games in August as well as the Jones Cup.
"Ang focus ko is for the Jones Cup muna," Ravena said. "Ang pinaka-importante pa rin is the performance in the Jones Cup. As a team, we have to perform together, stick to the system of Coach Chot (Reyes)."
