'Home game' just added pressure for Arellano, admits Codiñera

MANILA, Philippines – Arellano University head coach Jerry Codiñera cut a frustrated figure after the Chiefs failed to defend their home court in the NCAA Season 93 men's basketball tournament on Thursday against San Sebastian College.

Playing in their home court, in front of their fans, the Chiefs sputtered in the beginning then fell apart down the stretch, allowing the Stags to come away with a 65-56 road victory. Arellano fell to 1-1 in the tournament, the same record as San Sebastian.

Codiñera said after the game that the officiating played a factor in their poor performance, but made it clear that his team also failed to respond to the challenge.

"Sign of immaturity pa talaga," he said. "Ang immaturity kasi, hot or cold 'yan eh. Sometimes they will play well, sometimes they will play bad."

"Immature pa rin 'yung team. We're there, (but) inconsistent lang din," he added.

It did not help that their home court advantage did not translate. Although there were more Arellano fans inside their own gym – which can accommodate 200 to 250 people – the San Sebastian contingent became rowdier as the game went on and as the Stags remained in control.
