Fil-Brit boxer eager to prove he belongs on PH team

The Philippines will be fielding a big man to the Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur next month and he won't be competing in basketball.

John Marvin, a 6-foot-1 Englishman with Filipino roots, will compete in the light-heavyweight class in boxing in the regional meet.

Marvin, who was born to a Pampanga-raised mother and a British father, will be the country’s first boxer to fight in the heavier weight categories in the SEA Games in a long while.

“As soon as I heard there's an 81-kg spot for the Southeast Asian Games for the Philippines, it just fell at the right time for me,” Marvin told ABS-CBN News during a national team training session at the Rizal Sports Complex in Manila on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old said he was already working on getting a dual citizenship when he found out that Malaysia brought back the light-heavyweight division for next month's SEA Games.

“It's something I've always wanted to do, so I jumped into the opportunity for something so big,” said Marvin, who hails from the Isle of Wight in England.
