In their first game without team captain Alyssa Valdez, the Cool Smashers came away with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 victory, with setter Jia Morado utilizing every weapon in their line-up. Pau Soriano and Rose Vargas each scored 15 points, and Coleen Bravo added 13 to lead the way for Creamline.
It was an impressive victory for the Cool Smashers, who had mostly relied on the high-scoring Valdez in their first four games of the tournament. The former Ateneo de Manila University star is averaging 27 points per game for Creamline, the highest mark in the league.
Without the "Phenom," Creamline displayed its teamwork and depth. While Soriano, Vargas and Bravo were their top scorers on Wednesday, Cesca Racraquin and Rizza Mandapat also had their moments, and veteran Ging Balse came off the bench for four points.
"We're always telling our players na Creamline is not about Alyssa – it's about the team," said Creamline assistant coach Oliver Almadro. "It's about kung sino ang nandiyan. We will have to find a way, make the most of what we have."
Almadro acknowledged that they groped for form early in the game, trailing 6-12 in Set 1 before finding their rhythm. "'Yung resiliency, nandoon," he said. "'Yun ang pinaka-maganda, and as you can see naman, everybody delivered."
